Alexandre Laure – Chad – 25  

Chair

Strategic Planning and Youth Advocacy

Alexandre is a policy analyst and youth specialist. He graduated from Sciences Po Toulouse and is completing his Master in Management from EDHEC Business School. His background and life experiences have been extremely diverse. Having lived, studied and worked in 10 different countries (Chad, the Central African Republic, Mali, France, Gabon, Madagascar, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain and Ethiopia), he has always been inspired by the dynamics of multilateral cooperation. Alexandre acquired progressive work experience as entrepreneur (founder of Koula), volunteer (representative of the African Youth International Expert Panel), and business analyst (apprentice at Orange) at both national and international level. He works at the United Nations Populations Fund where his current focus is on HIV prevention responses for UNCT Ethiopia. These experiences have enabled him to gain a broad multicultural understanding, an open-minded attitude towards diversity and ethnicity, and flexibility in adapting to new environments.

As Technical Working Group facilitator – Alexandre is responsible for the groups’ outputs on an African Youth Development and Composite Policy Index, Technical notes for the Statistical database and provides leadership to group work exercises and team work.

 

Naima Green – Afro Descendant – 23

Public Policy and Diaspora

Naima is a Belfer International and Global Affairs Fellow and a second-year Master in Public Policy candidate at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. She received her Bachelor of Arts in International Relations with Honors from Stanford University. Her interests include cultural diplomacy, policy, and international exchange, especially in Africa.  At the Kennedy School, she is the co-chair of the Black Policy Conference: a forum to discuss policy issues affecting global black communities that has featured keynote speakers (www.hks.harvard.edu/bpc). Naima has also self-initiated several international exchange and education programs between youth in Africa and American youth of African descent. She has lived in South Africa, the USA, Egypt and Ethiopia.

In the Technical Working Group, Naima serves as public policy analyst and is responsible for the groups’ outputs on the Guidelines for constructing Youth Development Indicators (Analysis, Interpretation, Sources of Information, Reporting periods and mechanisms, and Definitions).

 

Binyam Mekasha – Ethiopia – 24

Economics and Statistics

Binyam has a B.A. in Economics (with great distinction) from Arba Minch University and holds a Master of Science in Economics from Addis Ababa University. He has a sound working knowledge of Africa’s micro and macroeconomic environment. Binyam currently interns at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). He has published ‘Aid Effectiveness in Poverty Reduction: an empirical evidence from Official Development Assistance in Selected Sub-Saharan African countries’ (Adama University press, 2007) and his Master’s Dissertation focuses on youth health economics. He also is a member of the Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA). Binyam work’s experience includes entrepreneurship (founder and general manager of Habebe PLC) and project management (board member of Hope2020). Last but not least, he took a leave from his teacher position at Adama University to be fully committed to development organizations.

In the Technical Working Group, he is responsible for the groups’ output on the Practical and Conceptual consideration for operationalizing a Youth Empowerment Measure.

 

Lina Abdullahi – Ethiopia – 22  

Rapporteur

Peace and Security

Lina holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Relations, and she is currently completing her Masters in Peace and Security Studies, both diplomas are from Addis Ababa University. She is engaged in research activities on the issue of peace and security across the continent. She also has extensive service volunteering background since the age of 15 in both virtual and practical community and university based projects. She is involved in coordination, planning and organizing activities and programmes. She was active participant in the African Union Youth Strategic Review Workshop on Youth Voluntarism in Africa – the African Union Youth Voluntary Corps (AUYVC) that is due to be launched in 2010.

In the Technical Working Group, Lina brings her knowledge and experience in assisting the overall process by serving as Rapporteur in the group meetings and provide analysis on peace and security issues on the Status of Youth in Africa Report 2010.

 

Michael Obiekwe – Diaspora – 24  

Governance and Corporate Social Responsibility

Michael holds a B.A. degree in International Affairs from the University of Georgia.  He is a first generation Nigerian-American, who is currently completing a research analyst internship with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). He comes to UNECA from his position as medical manager at the Atlanta Ropheka Medical Center in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Professionally, Michael is interested in youth advocacy issues that shape public business, private business, and entrepreneurship. 

In the Technical Working Group, Michael is responsible for the groups’ outputs on a Strategy for delivering the resource requirement for the PoA through Corporate Social Responsibility and the African Youth Trust Fund.

 

Malaika Rakotomalala – Madagascar – 24

Gender Mainstreaming

Malaika holds two university degrees: a Master in Political Sciences and a Master in Development Studies, both from Sciences Po Lille. She went to France to complete her secondary and tertiary education. She has lived in 6 different countries (Madagascar, Spain, France, Australia, South Africa and Ethiopia). Malaika has work experience in bilateral cooperation (working on environmental issues in South Africa), nongovernmental organization (leader of Amnesty International’s Refugee Team), and multilateral development (the United Nations Populations Fund). At UNFPA her primary focus is gender, with particular attention to early marriage and gender-based-violence (GBV). These experiences qualify her as gender specialist.

In the Technical Working Group, Malaika is responsible for the groups’ outputs in ensuring mainstream gender analysis. She will advocate on gender inequities, early marriage and genital mutilations making sure that the TWG integrates gender’s cross-cutting issues in the outputs.

 

Binyam Mersea Tesfa – Ethiopia – 26

Information Systems Management

Binyam (aka Bin) has two degrees, a B.A. in Software Engineering (with great distinction) from Microlink I.T. College, and another B.A. in Law from Saint Mary’s University College. Bin is a dynamic young and proactive citizen raised in Africa’s diplomatic capital. He has more than six years of work experience in the area of I.T., including website design and maintenance, software and web application development and teaching to college students on IT related issues. Bin is co-founder of Kin Digital Studio, which provides IT support & consultancy, photography and digital design services to a variety of organisations.

In the Technical Working Group, Bin is responsible for the groups’ outputs on a Country Profile and Statistical Database on Youth in Africa as well as the Website. He will develop the virtual online interface that comprises the interactive website, organized database and other intensifying modules.

 

Mariam Mohamdi Cheikh – Mauritania – 26  

Translations

Mariam is a qualified translator. She has two B.A. (in English and in Arabic languages) and a Master in Arabic Language, Literature and Civilization, all degrees from Sorbonne University. She will complete her proficiency with a Master in Arts in Translation at the University of Monterrey, Institute of International Studies, from September 2009. As a Mauritanian person who was born in Niger, brought up in Gabon and now living between Paris and the UAE, Marian has developed the ability to communicate and present her work or projects in a remarkable manner. Learning 8 languages enabled her to understand other cultures and made her eager to learn more about development issues. She is the founder and member of the National Mauritanian Council in France and believes, as a volunteer, that twenty years from now we will be more disappointed by the things that we didn't do than by the ones we did do.

In the Technical Working Group, Mariam is responsible for the interpretation of the TWG documentation in the African Union working languages. She also helps designing the TWG’s communication strategy to youth organizations.
